Researcher Profile
Dr Georgios Liakopoulos is a historian-Ottomanist, currently employed as Assistant Professor in Ottoman History in the Department of History and Archaeology at the University of Ioannina, Greece. He holds degrees from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (BA, 1999), Bilkent University in Ankara (MA, 2002), and Royal Holloway, University of London (PhD, 2009).
With over fifteen years of teaching and research experience in Greece and abroad, his expertise spans economic history, historical geography and demography, epigraphy, palaeography, and the study of archival sources from the Ottoman period. He has taught Ottoman History, Ottoman Language and Palaeography, and Modern Turkish Language at leading institutions, including the University of Athens and the Freie Universität Berlin.
From 2018 to 2025, Dr Liakopoulos was a senior postdoctoral researcher in the Palaeo-Science and History research group at the Max Planck Institute of Geoanthropology in Jena, where he focused on Ottoman defterology, geostatistical analysis of quantitative historical data, and socio-environmental change. His research emphasises interdisciplinary approaches and international collaborations to explore the historical dynamics of the southern Balkans and Asia Minor under Ottoman rule.
As part of the EUROPest project, he investigates historical sources that document epidemics in Ottoman-period Macedonia and Epirus, aiming to uncover patterns of disease outbreaks and their societal impacts.
Dr Liakopoulos has authored and edited more than thirty scholarly publications, including monographs, articles, and collective volumes.
