Researcher Profile
Cristiano Vignola is a researcher in Palaeobotany and Palynology at Sapienza University of Rome, Italy. He deals with the reconstruction of past vegetation and climate from natural and human deposits. The focus of his research is the Mediterranean area during the Holocene. He outlines past interaction between human societies and the environment by studying plant macroremains (wood, seeds, fruits), providing insights into the use of plants for different purposes. By analysing plant microremains (pollen and other palynomorphs), he allows to depict past environmental conditions, as well as landscape evolution and drivers of change when considering ecological and anthropogenic pollen indicators. He also applies the study of stable carbon and nitrogen isotopes to plant remains recovered from archaeological sites to reconstruct palaeoclimate and ancient agricultural practices.
